Angela Jolie from Mosul: The situation of the city is appalling .. and the worst destruction during the years of its work

BAGHDAD, The UN special envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie described the situation in the Iraqi city of Mosul as "horrific, and that Iraqis are still surrounded by bodies and scenes of destruction."

"This is the worst destruction I've ever seen in my years with UNHCR," the US actress said in front of the rubble of the mosque during a visit to the city on Saturday.

"The situation here in the western part of the city of Mosul is appalling," she said, " adding that displacement continues, and refugee camps near the city continue to be overcrowded."

She urged the international community not to forget the city and its "landless people who do not have medicine for their children".

"The residents here have lost everything, their homes have been destroyed, they do not have medicine for their children, and many do not have access to clean water or basic services," she said.

"The Iraqis in the city are still surrounded by the bodies and the rubble of the houses they are now trying to rebuild after the terrible trauma they suffered during their occupation," Jolie said.

"Empowering the population to return and stabilize the city is a key factor for the stability of Iraq and the region in the future," she said.

Nearly half a million Iraqis fled their homes, mostly ethnic and religious minorities, because of the fighting in Mosul.

About eight thousand and 300 houses destroyed in the city, and five bridges over the Euphrates River collapsed, three of them are subject to restoration, according to the United Nations.
