BAGHDAD, The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the Palestinians and Israelis to avoid a " new devastating conflict" after an escalation of violence between Israel and the Gaza Strip, killing four Palestinians and an Israeli soldier.
Guterich expressed, in a statement, deep concern over the serious escalation of violence in Gaza and southern Israel, stressing that it is the duty of all parties to avoid the danger of a new and devastating conflict.
He called on "Hamas and Palestinian militants to stop firing rockets and balloons and incendiary provocations along the dividing line" between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
"Israel must show restraint to avoid igniting the situation."
"I encourage all parties to work with the United Nations, especially its Special Coordinator (Nikolai Mladenov), to find a way out of this dangerous situation. Any new escalation threatens the lives of Palestinians and Israelis, exacerbates the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and undermines current efforts to improve conditions of life and help the Palestinian Authority return to Gaza".
In a letter to the UN Security Council on Saturday, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that Hamas was solely responsible for the escalation, which killed an Israeli soldier in an "attack that Israel did not cause."
"He called in a letter published in a statement the Security Council and the international community to condemn Hamas without hesitation.
