Aoun solicits Luxembourg support for displaced Syrians’ return

President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, on Monday welcomed at the Baabda palace the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, Maria Teresa, with whom he held a tour d'horizon bearing the current situation and the bilateral ties.

President Aoun solicited via the Grand Duchess her country's support to secure a safe return of the displaced Syrians to their homeland, rather than awaiting a political solution in this regard.

The visiting Grand Duchess expressed her happiness to be in Lebanon and appreciated the "humanitarian assistance provided by Lebanon to the displaced in the various fields, especially at the educational and health levels."

The high-ranking Luxembourg's official stressed the importance of economic cooperation between Lebanon and Luxembourg, notably devoting attention to projects related to women affairs and development.

The head of State welcomed the Duchess in Lebanon, hailing her commitments to "humanitarian and social obligations across the globe," wishing success for the international conference hosted in her country to "discuss forms of sexual violence in fragile environments."

Aoun later met with a Polish parliamentary delegation, led by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Intercultural and Inter-religious Dialogue, Polish MP Pawel Skutecki, accompanied by a delegation of the Lebanese International Businessmen Federation and the Arab-Polish Club for Culture and Economy.

The delegation briefed the President on the meeting to be held tomorrow to sign a strategic agreement for cooperation between the Union and the Arab-Polish Club to stimulate investments between the two countries.

The President also met with Lebanon's Ambassador to the Netherlands, Abdel Sattar Issa, with talks reportedly touching on the support the Netherlands is providing for Lebanon, especially regarding the Syrian refugees.

Aoun also received at the Baabda palace Venezuelan Ambassador to Lebanon, Souad Karam, who came on a farewell visit upon the end of her diplomatic mission in Lebanon.

In recognition of her efforts in furthering Lebanese-Venezuelan relations, Aoun awarded the outgoing ambassador a high ranking national cedar citation, wishing her success in her new mission.
