KAUST Concludes Scientific Study on Fishing Activities of Sharks

Jeddah, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has concluded a scientific study on fishing activities of sharks in major high seas, which are centered on ecologically important shark hotspots worldwide, where the results of this study could provide a "blueprint" for deciding where to place large-scale marine protected areas (MPAs).

Professor of Marine Science Carlos Duarte, at KAUST, said that an international team of over 150 scientists from 26 countries have collated movement data from nearly 2,000 sharks tracked, with satellite transmitter tags.

He added that this research highlights the need and power of collaboration to better understand global conservation challenges in open oceans.
