Bou Habib briefs Mikati on outcome of Egypt visit: Unconditional support for Lebanon, Gaza ceasefire efforts

Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, on Friday held a meeting with Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Abdallah Bou Habib, at the Grand Serail. Following the meeting, Minister Bou Habib said that he had provided an update to the PM on his recent visit to Egypt, during which he secured unconditional support for Lebanon and emphasized the importance of ending the war in Lebanon, which is intrinsically linked to the conflict in Gaza. However, he stressed that Lebanon's peace remains the priority. 'The discussions also covered the extension of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate,' Bou Habib added, confirming that Lebanon has agreed to the first draft of the extension, with only minor amendments, and expressed hope that the extension would be finalized within the month, securing another year for UNIFIL's operations. Additionally, Minister Bou Habib revealed that Lebanon would be sending a message to ambassadors outlining the country's core principles regarding foreig n policy, particularly in light of the ongoing events in Gaza and southern Lebanon. The Foreign Minister further highlighted a joint American-Egyptian-Qatari initiative to convene a meeting on August 15 aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza. 'The Lebanese government fully supports the joint statement issued by U.S. President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The statement calls for immediate relief for the people of Gaza and the release of hostages, recognizing the immense suffering endured by both Palestinians and hostages' families,' Bou Habib stated. Moreover, the Foreign Minister praised the leaders' efforts in crafting a framework agreement and emphasized Lebanon's endorsement of the principles laid out by President Biden and enshrined in UN Security Council Resolution 2735. The meeting also addressed the challenges facing the Ministry of Education as the new school year approaches, particularly in light of the situation in southern Lebanon and its potential impact on school infrastructure. Additionally, discussions covered issues related to the Lebanese University and the upcoming academic year. Minister Halabi expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister's support for the education sector. Mikati later met with Minister of Industry, George Boujikian, with whom he discussed the latest developments in the industrial sector. Minister Boujikian provided an updat e on ongoing efforts, particularly focusing on agricultural-industrial integration and food security. Lebanese government welcomes joint statement of the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United States

The Lebanese government welcomed the joint statement by the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United States of America, which stressed "the need to put an immediate end to the suffering of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, reach a ceasefire, and conclude an agreement to release hostages and detainees, and called on the two parties to the conflict to resume urgent discussions to overcome the remaining obstacles to reaching the desired agreement." Foreign Minister holds call with UK Foreign Secretary of State

Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, received a telephone call from Rt Hon David Lammy, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom. During the call, the minister congratulated the secretary of state on assuming his new duties and wished him continued success. Dr. Al Zayani said he was keen on meeting with the secretary to further discuss enhancing the longstanding relations between the two countries. The two sides highlighted the historic Bahrain-UK cooperation, within the framework of the strategic dialogue. They also emphasised means to further enhance cooperation. The two sides emphasised the ongoing Arab and international efforts to achieve a ceasefire, protect civilians in accordance with international law, facilitate humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, secure the release of hostages and detainees, and mitigate tensions to uphold regional security and stability. RMS uses Hugo Robotic System for tumour removal surgeries

The Royal Medical Services (RMS) for Hospitals of the Bahrain Defense Force (BDF) successfully conducted five malignant tumour removal surgeries using the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system. Those are the first robotic surgeries in Bahrain. Dr. Ayman Raees, Consultant Urologist and Acting Chief of Medical Staff, led the team in performing three prostate cancer surgeries on patients in their fifties and sixties, one kidney tumour removal, and one adrenal gland tumour removal on a patient in her 30s. All procedures were successful with no complications. Brigadier General Dr. Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, the Commander of RMS, highlighted that the acquisition of Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system makes the RMS the first medical institution in the Middle East and North Africa to adopt this technology. This development aims to enhance healthcare services and ensure a high-quality health environment for all community members. On his part, Dr. Raees noted that the Hugo robotic-assisted surg ery system offers superior precision, control, and flexibility compared to traditional surgeries, leading to quicker patient recovery and shorter hospital stays. The system features a 3D camera and four robotic arms equipped with surgical instruments, allowing the surgeon to control the arms via a remote console, reducing infection risks and improving surgical outcomes. Looking ahead, the hospital plans to use the robotic system for various surgeries, including general surgery, gynaecology, and bariatric surgery, to continue providing state-of-the-art medical services.
