Acacia Nilotica Blossom Season Boosts Najran’s Beekeeping and Environment

Riyadh: The blossom season of the Acacia nilotica tree in the Najran Region is among the most crucial environmental and economic periods for local beekeepers. Its fragrant flowers and nutrient-rich fruits not only support the bee colonies but also contribute significantly to increasing local income.

According to Saudi Press Agency, Acacia nilotica trees bloom from summer through mid-autumn, thriving on mountain slopes and valley banks at altitudes ranging between 800 and 1,500 meters. These resilient trees, reaching heights of five to eight meters, are notable for their resistance to drought and salinity, making them an essential source of grazing for camels and livestock.

The honey derived from Acacia nilotica is highly valued for its exceptional quality and health benefits, drawing numerous beekeepers to the Badr Al-Janoub Governorate during the flowering season. Beyond honey production, various parts of the tree are utilized in traditional and industrial applications, such as tanning. Additionally, its roots are boiled for purification and personal care purposes.

Efforts to replant Acacia nilotica are underway by environmental associations in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. These initiatives aim to enhance vegetation cover and combat desertification in the region. The Najran Green Association has successfully planted over 125,000 Acacia nilotica trees in recent years, with an ambitious goal to reach 200,000 trees by 2030.
