Aseer Magpie: Saudi Arabia’s Sole Endemic Bird Faces Threats

Riyadh: The Aseer magpie (Pica asirensis) is the only bird species endemic to Saudi Arabia, found exclusively in the mountainous Aseer Region, a globally significant area for biodiversity.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the Aseer magpie is distinguished by its intelligence, notably its ability to recognize itself in a mirror. Locally referred to as "the magpie," it is known for its melodious sounds. The bird is easily identified by its black and white plumage and its distinctive, large dome-shaped nests, which are typically constructed in juniper or acacia trees.

The Aseer magpie is currently listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Recent assessments indicate that there are only about 100 breeding pairs remaining, equating to roughly 200 adult birds. The primary threat to the Aseer magpie's survival is climate change, which has led to a reduction in its natural habitat due to increasing temperatures and arid weather conditions over recent decades.
