Jazan:The wild climber Cissus rotundifolia, a member of the grapevine family native to southwestern Saudi Arabia, showcases the botanical and cultural richness of the Jazan Region.
According to Saudi Press Agency, Dr. Yahya Masrahi, a plant ecology professor at Jazan University, explained that Cissus rotundifolia has succulent stems capable of storing water and growing up to 10 meters. These features enable the plant to climb trees and navigate the rocky terrain of hillsides and valleys. It is characterized by fleshy, serrated leaves, small greenish-yellow flowers, and berry-like fruits that mature to a deep red color.
In addition to its ecological significance, Cissus rotundifolia plays a role in the region's culinary traditions. Its leaves are traditionally used in cooking with meats for their distinctive flavor or prepared by boiling, mashing, and seasoning with sesame oil to accompany flatbreads. The plant's foliage has also been historically utilized in folk practices for polishing silverware and as part of customary remedies.
