Makkah: Rapid medical intervention at King Faisal Hospital, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, helped to save the life of a Mauritanian female pilgrim in her forties who suffered a strangulated umbilical hernia during the 1447 AH Hajj season. According to Saudi Press Agency, the hospital said the patient was transferred to the emergency department by the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, suffering from severe abdominal pain, swelling around the navel area, nausea, and difficulty moving. The medical team immediately began treatment upon her arrival. Clinical examination and diagnostic imaging confirmed a strangulated umbilical hernia, an emergency condition requiring urgent intervention. The medical team, led by consultant surgeon Dr. Jihad Balbaid, decided to perform emergency laparoscopic surgery, successfully releasing the strangulated segment and repairing the hernia through small incisions without the need for conventional open surgery. The treating team confirmed that the laparoscopic procedure helpe d to reduce postoperative pain and speed recovery, enabling the patient to leave the hospital in stable condition and continue performing Hajj rituals. The intervention reflects the healthcare system's readiness to provide specialized care for pilgrims during the Hajj season.
