Cairo: The Arab League launched the First Arab Regional Forum on Early Warning Systems, Disaster Preparedness, and Response at the General Secretariat headquarters today in Cairo. The forum saw high-level participation from representatives of Arab countries, regional and international organizations, United Nations agencies, and experts and specialists in disaster risk reduction and early warning.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom participated in the forum with a delegation headed by National Center for Meteorology CEO Dr. Ayman Ghulam. In a speech delivered on behalf of the secretary-general of the Arab League, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the International Political Affairs Sector at the Arab League Ambassador Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Manzlawiy emphasized that the Arab region is facing challenges due to climate change and increasing weather phenomena. He highlighted the need for a strategic shift from post-disaster response to preparedness, prevention, and early warning, calling for concerted efforts from national, regional, and international partners.
He further stated that the forum serves as a high-level Arab platform for exchanging expertise and experiences, enhancing coordination among Arab states and their partners, and formulating a shared regional vision. This vision aims to develop comprehensive and effective early warning systems capable of reaching all segments of society, aligning with international initiatives such as the United Nations 'Early Warnings for All' initiative.
The two-day forum addresses several key issues, including enhancing the effectiveness of early warning systems, linking warning to response, the role of technology and communications, sustainable financing, and capacity building. Additionally, the forum reviews successful Arab experiences and the best regional practices in this field.
