Riyadh: The Food Preservation Project, managed by the Khair Association for Preserving Food, has reinforced its role in minimizing food waste and fostering social unity in the Northern Borders Region. During the first seven months of 2026, the initiative successfully prepared approximately 3,000 meals for beneficiaries by collecting surplus edible food from 169 events.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the project was inaugurated on December 15, 2022, after fulfilling all necessary legal and regulatory prerequisites. It stands as a pioneering effort in food preservation and redistribution, aiming to achieve lasting social and environmental benefits.
The project's operation involves an integrated system that starts with the collection of surplus edible food from wedding halls and restaurants. This is conducted under regulated procedures to ensure food safety and quality. The collected food is then repackaged and distributed to beneficiaries through well-planned operational mechanisms that comply with the highest food safety standards.
The initiative focuses on assisting various vulnerable groups, including low-income families, orphans, older individuals, families of prisoners, and people with disabilities. Beneficiaries are identified using the association's approved databases and in coordination with relevant authorities, ensuring that help reaches those in need while maintaining their privacy and dignity.
This initiative is part of the association's broader efforts to promote environmental and food sustainability, transforming surplus food from a potential waste source into a valuable community asset, while advocating for cooperation and social unity across the Northern Borders Region.
