Jabal Qidr Recognized Among First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites

Madinah: Jabal Qidr, located in the Harrat Khaybar volcanic field north of the Madinah Region, has been recognized as one of the First 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites by the International Union of Geological Sciences. This recognition is due to its scientific, aesthetic, and cultural value.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the mountain is a unique site characterized by its recent volcanic activity, with its last eruption occurring about a thousand years ago. The site features a clearly defined volcanic cone rising to 400 meters, resulting in massive flows of basaltic lava and volcanic material that create a distinctive geomorphological landscape.

A notable aspect of Jabal Qidr is the interaction between its geological features and historical heritage. The volcanic flows have covered significant archaeological stone structures known as "desert kites," which are believed to date back around 5,000 years to the Bronze Age. This combination of natural and historical elements makes Jabal Qidr an important destination for geological researchers and a promising site for developing geotourism in the Kingdom.
