Riyadh– King Salman Royal Natural Reserve Development Authority has announced its commitment to joining the green list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature through a two-day symposium that the reserve organized under the title: “Nature reserves: International Bases and Standards” in cooperation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature with the participation of government institutions with the aim of realizing the reserve’s goals in protecting nature elements and restoring ecological balance.
The authority adopts a sustainable approach to implement its vision in accordance with its strategic objectives, which include the renewal of the degraded ecosystems of the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve and the preservation of its wildlife and environmental habitats, the establishment of the reserve as a leading destination for managing the integrated natural and cultural landscape, as well as leading a participatory and comprehensive management approach that realizes the aspirations of the reserve’s stakeholders.
This was stated in a memorandum of intent signed by the King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve Development Authority with the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Regional Office for West Asia, in which it pledged to submit the full file of the classification of the green regulations in this month.
Over the past two years, the authority has worked on a number of initiatives, including the rehabilitation of degraded environments through the cultivation of native wildlife species on protected lands, with the aim of combating desertification, drought, and releasing deer, Al-Wadihi Oryx and Nubian ore in various areas of the reserve, as well as holding meetings and joint workshops with the local community.
The authority, through joining the green list, seeks to realize and enhance the effective administration of areas of the reserve through developing and realizing sustainable and measurable environment conservation programs and engaging the local community in a way that accords with international standards to realize environmental sustainable development, in addition to its comprehensive goals on increasing the number of reserve areas that are run in an effective and fair ways.
The green list is considered an important tool for administrating reserve areas due to including indicators that urge environmental preservation and forming an approach to engage stakeholders.
The green list is a global certification program aimed at achieving and promoting effective, equitable and successful reserve areas by shedding light on the best practices and providing indicators for progress towards effective and fair administration.
