Aleppo: The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) continues its efforts to enhance food security and support livelihoods in Syria through various agricultural development initiatives.
According to Saudi Press Agency, KSrelief has launched an agricultural project to bolster the wheat production chain in the eastern countryside of Aleppo. The project focuses on rehabilitating irrigation and drainage networks, upgrading water pumping stations, supporting the distribution of Syrian wheat seeds, and improving agricultural machinery and extension services.
The initiative has directly benefited 2,750 families, impacting a total of 16,500 individuals, and has indirectly reached 540,000 people. The project includes the rehabilitation of main and secondary irrigation canals, addressing issues like leakage and lime-scale buildup, and installing solar-powered pumping units to enhance irrigation efficiency and agricultural productivity in the region.
Additionally, KSrelief's efforts in supporting Syrian wheat seed propagation involve providing mobile seed-sifting equipment equipped with packaging and sterilization materials. The project also includes the rehabilitation of a central warehouse for better storage of improved seeds.
The project further extends to the rehabilitation and support of three agricultural extension centers, equipping them with necessary machinery and technical staff. Group training sessions are organized to educate farmers on modern agricultural practices, water conservation methods, and optimal crop management techniques.
This initiative is part of the Kingdom's broader humanitarian and relief efforts through KSrelief, aimed at empowering Syrian farming families, enhancing their resilience against challenges, and contributing to livelihood stability and food security in the region.
