Mawani and DP World Commit to $800 Million Expansion of Jeddah Islamic Port

Jeddah: The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), in collaboration with DP World and under the auspices of Minister of Transport and Logistic Services Saleh Al-Jasser, has embarked on an ambitious SAR3 billion ($800 million) expansion project for the South Container Terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port. This initiative aims to significantly enhance the port's operational capabilities and boost its capacity from 1.8 million to 4 million TEUs.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the modernization efforts will integrate advanced automation, digitization, and smart systems to streamline operations. The implementation of IoT and AI technologies will reduce gate transaction times to just 10 seconds. Additionally, the introduction of automated electric yard cranes and an expansion of the coastal crane fleet from 14 to 17 by 2025 will further improve operational efficiency. The capacity for refrigerated containers will also see an increase from 1,200 to 2,340, with a new facility being developed by DP World to inspect 75 refrigerated containers simultaneously.

The terminal's 2,150-meter berth, which includes an 18-meter deep-water section, will be equipped to accommodate up to five large container ships concurrently. Mawani and DP World are setting a target to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% over the next five years through the use of electric cranes, trucks, green building designs, and water recycling systems.

Furthermore, DP World is investing in a 415,000-square-meter logistics area to offer advanced storage, distribution, and shipping services. This development will reinforce Jeddah Islamic Port's strategic role as a vital trade link between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The project is slated for completion in the second quarter of 2026.
