Najran: Dates are a staple of Ramadan meals throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Najran Region is particularly renowned for producing premium varieties such as Al-Bayadh and Al-Mawakil, highly sought after by shoppers during the holy month due to their exceptional quality and rich nutritional value.
According to Saudi Press Agency, among the finest dates cultivated in Najran, Al-Bayadh dates are distinguished by their light color and delicate taste, making them a popular ingredient in many traditional Ramadan dishes. Al-Mawakil dates, known for their soft texture and rich flavor, are a preferred choice for breaking the fast (Iftar) and serving guests.
During Ramadan, the date market in Najran's historic Aba Al-Saud district witnesses a significant surge in shoppers. Residents are keen to purchase dates to replenish their bodies after hours of fasting, as dates provide essential natural sugars, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Beyond their nutritional benefits, dates serve as a profound symbol of hospitality, deeply rooted in Najran's traditions of generosity and welcome.
The region boasts over 500,000 date palms across approximately 2,696 hectares of farms, producing more than 40,000 tons of dates annually.
Najran's moderate climate and fertile soil significantly contribute to the superior quality of its agricultural output. Furthermore, date palm cultivation receives dedicated support from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture to maintain product excellence and facilitate marketing, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to increase the agricultural gross domestic product, achieve food security, and ensure agricultural sustainability.
