Qassim Farmers Embrace Hydroponics and Vertical Farming for Water Conservation and High-Yield Crops

Qassim: Farmers in the Qassim Region are pioneering the use of hydroponics and vertical farming to cultivate water-saving, high-quality crops. Hydroponics is being recognized across the Kingdom as a sustainable agricultural method that significantly boosts crop productivity while reducing water consumption by up to 90% compared to traditional farming practices. This innovative approach addresses key challenges such as food security, water scarcity, and soil degradation, thereby supporting economic development and ensuring food self-sufficiency.

According to Saudi Press Agency, farmers in Qassim are employing advanced hydroponic systems that allow crops to grow in nutrient-rich water solutions. This method provides precise control over environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and nutrient levels, which is essential for optimizing growth and yield. Hydroponics expert Fahd Al-Zaid emphasized that the method, especially when combined with vertical farming, can produce large quantities of high-quality, pesticide-free crops throughout the year while consuming less energy. Although the initial investment and technical knowledge required to manage nutrient balances can pose challenges, the method offers substantial financial returns through increased productivity and water savings.

The government is actively supporting these farmers by providing financing and guidance to develop sustainable agricultural systems. This initiative is in line with Vision 2030's objective of promoting innovative and sustainable farming practices across the Kingdom.
