Riyadh:The Roads General Authority (RGA) has announced that the use of in-place pavement recycling technology is significantly enhancing road improvement projects by cutting project durations by 40% and reducing maintenance costs by 26%.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this innovative approach is part of RGA's broader strategy to enhance spending efficiency, road quality, and safety. The technology operates by milling, recycling, and relaying asphalt with water instead of heat, which reduces energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions while conserving natural resources.
The recycling process involves milling the top asphalt layer to a depth of 5 to 10 centimeters, mixing it with other materials, relaying, leveling, compacting, and smoothing it for road use. This method aligns with the objectives of the Road Sector Program, which aims to reduce road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people, adhere to International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) safety standards, and maintain high service levels.
