Roads Authority: Saudi Road Code Enhances Freight Movement Through Strategic Planning

Riyadh: The Roads General Authority (RGA) stated that the Saudi Road Code contributes to enhancing freight movement by adopting a long-term strategic planning approach for truck traffic across the Kingdom's road network. This approach includes conducting comprehensive studies of freight traffic at both the national and regional levels to assess actual transportation needs and identify the most suitable routes.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the code also provides for the designation of specific roads and zones for truck traffic, regulates the movement of heavy vehicles on major high-volume corridors, and seeks to minimize conflicts between pedestrian traffic and freight routes.

The authority emphasized that these measures are designed to reduce truck travel times, lower carbon emissions, and alleviate traffic congestion associated with freight transport, while also enhancing the safety and operational efficiency of the road network.

It noted that the Saudi Road Code serves as a comprehensive technical reference for all entities involved in the Kingdom's road sector, including ministries, development authorities, regional municipalities, and municipal administrations. It provides them with access to information, guidelines, technical drawings, procedures, and checklists necessary for road planning, design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of all types, while incorporating environmental and safety considerations to ensure compliance with minimum standards for quality, safety, security, economic efficiency, and sustainability across the Kingdom.
