Robotic Hybrid Surgery Removes Malignant Tumor in Stomach and Esophagus at Makkah Medical City

Makkah: A specialized surgical team at King Abdullah Medical City, a member of the Makkah Health Cluster, successfully performed a complex operation to remove a malignant tumor in the esophageal region and reconstruct the patient's digestive system. The procedure was performed using hybrid surgery, combining the precision of robotic surgery with conventional surgical techniques tailored to the patient's condition, thereby enhancing surgical outcomes.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the patient, in his 50s, was discharged from the hospital on the sixth day following surgery, in stable condition, to continue his recovery at home. The relatively short hospital stay reflects the patient's favorable recovery following the major procedure.

Hospital stays following major esophageal and gastric surgeries at specialized medical centers worldwide typically range from eight to 11 days, depending on the patient's condition, the type of surgery, and the individual recovery trajectory.

The procedure was supported by the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program, which improved the patient's recovery by reducing pain and blood loss, accelerating the return to normal activity, reducing wound-related complications, and shortening the hospital stay.
