Salma Geopark Recognized as UNESCO Global Geopark

Hail:Salma Geopark, situated in the Hail Region, offers a rich tapestry of geological formations and historical sites, allowing visitors to delve into its geological heritage and the history of human settlement in the area.

According to Saudi Press Agency, this remarkable site was officially designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in April 2025. Covering over 3,145 square kilometers, Salma Geopark is home to rock formations that have evolved over numerous geological periods.

Abdullah Al-Buraiki, Director General of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC) branch in Hail, highlighted the park's geological diversity, which includes volcanic formations, craters, and cones. The park's value is further enhanced by the surrounding historical and archaeological sites, such as Faid Historic City and the historic Darb Zubaydah, also known as Zubaydah's trail.

The inclusion of Salma Geopark in the UNESCO Global Geoparks network presents an opportunity to promote its unique features on an international stage. This recognition is expected to boost geological and cultural tourism while emphasizing the importance of conserving both its natural and human heritage.
