Saudi Arabia Reinforces Its Global Leadership in AI Governance with Foresight Vision for Future AI Technologies

Saudi arabia: Saudi Arabia continues to consolidate its position as an active international partner in shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI) governance through its participation in the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance, being held in Geneva on the sidelines of the AI for Good Global Summit 2026.

According to Saudi Press Agency, the event comes amid international discussions emphasizing the need for AI governance in light of the rapid advancement of these technologies and the concerns arising from their irresponsible use.

Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), in partnership with International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) and the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), will host a side event during the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance on Tuesday titled 'Responsible, Trusted, and Safe AI for Prosperity: From Principles to Practice.'

The session will be held at Palexpo in Geneva and will explore ways to translate AI governance principles into practical applications that support sustainable development and digital prosperity.

This comes as Saudi Arabia, through initiatives led by SDAIA, has adopted forward-looking visions and studies that contribute to international discussions on the future of AI. Chief among them is a study titled "Foresight on the Governance of Artificial General Intelligence: Current Landscape and Future Prospects," which presents a comprehensive scientific framework for understanding Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), reviews the global landscape of governance for these advanced technologies, analyzes potential future development scenarios, and offers practical recommendations to help policymakers address these technologies in an ethically responsible manner.

The study's significance aligns with that of the major international dialogue on AI governance, led by the UN in Geneva, amid the unprecedented pace of advances in AI technologies. As these technologies move closer to more advanced capabilities that could enable them to perform a wide range of intellectual tasks currently carried out by humans, AGI governance has emerged as one of the most strategically important issues on the international agenda, given its direct implications for the future of economies, security, innovation, and sustainable development.

Saudi Arabia's participation in this global forum is underpinned by ongoing efforts led by SDAIA, driven by Saudi Vision 2030, to build a comprehensive national AI governance framework and develop regulatory frameworks and national policies that support the responsible use of AI technologies while promoting the principles of transparency, fairness, trustworthiness, and privacy protection.

In its assessment of the international landscape for AGI governance, the study notes that there are currently no dedicated international or national regulatory frameworks specifically governing AGI, despite numerous initiatives addressing AI governance more broadly.

It says this underscores the need to strengthen international cooperation and develop flexible governance frameworks capable of keeping pace with rapid technological advances.

The study also highlights the leading global trends in AGI governance, noting the diversity of regulatory approaches adopted by different countries. It further points to the growing role of global technology companies in developing proactive frameworks to manage the risks associated with advanced AI models, assess their capabilities, and establish the necessary safeguards to ensure their safe and responsible development and deployment.

Moreover, the study outlines Saudi Arabia's efforts to build an advanced AI governance framework through initiatives led by SDAIA. These include the issuance of the AI Ethics Principles, Generative AI Guidelines, AI Adoption Framework, and National AI Risk Management Framework, as well as the launch of a range of guidance documents and regulatory resources that enable organizations to adopt AI solutions safely and responsibly in line with international best practices.

Through its participation in the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva, Saudi Arabia reaffirms to the international community its continued commitment to strengthening international cooperation and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by contributing to the development of regulatory frameworks that promote the responsible and sustainable use of AI technologies. In doing so, the Kingdom reinforces its position as an active international partner in shaping the future of global AI governance for the benefit of humanity.
