Saudi Arabia Showcases Efforts to Combat Deepfakes at UNESCO

Paris: The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), in cooperation with the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE), showcased the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's pioneering efforts to advance the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) during its participation in UNESCO's Global Media and Information Literacy Week. According to Saudi Press Agency, SDAIA hosted a virtual session on deepfakes and misinformation risks as part of the event. The session aimed to enrich the global dialogue on responsible AI, presenting the Kingdom's experience alongside international best practices in addressing the technical challenges posed by manipulated content. The discussion also supported global efforts to enhance trust and credibility in media and information platforms. The participation reflects the joint efforts of SDAIA and ICAIRE to raise global awareness on AI ethics, highlight the risks of deepfake technologies, and support research and studies th at help protect societies from irresponsible AI outputs. Deepfake technology, a prominent application of AI, generates highly realistic audio and visual content that is often difficult to distinguish from reality. It achieves this by using advanced AI models to precisely replicate human features, voices, and behaviors. While deepfakes offer potential as innovative tools for education and entertainment, they also raise serious ethical and legal concerns related to privacy, credibility, and the protection of individuals from misuse.
