SPA Captures Lunar Features in Rafha Skies During ‘International Observe the Moon Night’

Riyadh: As countries around the world mark "International Observe the Moon Night" today, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness of lunar science and exploration, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) captured astronomical views of the Moon over Rafha Governorate in Northern Borders Region. The event provides the public and astronomy enthusiasts with an opportunity to observe lunar craters, mountains, and slopes, fostering greater interest in space and astronomical sciences. According to Saudi Press Agency, AFAQ Society for Astronomy member Barjas Al-Fulaih told SPA that the attention of astronomy enthusiasts worldwide is focused on the Moon tonight as part of a global initiative sponsored by NASA. He explained that the event aims to deepen the public's connection with the Moon by encouraging people to observe its unique terrain and learn about its characteristics. He noted that the observation coincides with the Moon being near its first-quarter phase. During this phase, the angle of sunlight highlights surf ace details, while craters, mountains, and slopes cast long, distinct shadows that enhance topographical contrast, making these features clearly visible during the evening hours. Al-Fulaih added that the Moon can be observed using various methods, ranging from the naked eye and binoculars to telescopes and photography. He noted that this phase, occurring a few days before the full moon, offers an excellent opportunity to examine the Moon's surface features in greater detail.
