Mecca: Crowd management in the Umrah system is no longer measured solely by the ability to control flows of visitors, but increasingly by how effectively it creates a fully integrated pilgrim experience.
According to Saudi Press Agency, this shift was evident at the third edition of the Umrah and Ziyarah Forum, which showcased a fundamental move from the traditional operational model toward a carefully engineered approach to the Umrah journey.
Discussions highlighted that the Umrah system no longer views crowds merely as numbers to be managed, but as individual journeys requiring attention to every detail, from pre-trip planning, to arrival and the ritual performance, and finally departure, within an interconnected system guided by high standards of efficiency and quality.
Interventions at congestion points are no longer the primary solution. Instead, the focus has shifted to predicting and preventing bottlenecks through big data analysis, movement pattern tracking, and by designing flexible routes that adjust in real time to changes in crowd density.
Participating entities presented operational models applying this approach, which helped reduce waiting times and improve the flow of Hajj performers.
The accompanying exhibition reinforced this approach with smart applications that help pilgrims throughout their journey, multilingual guidance systems, and digital platforms integrating services into a single interface, minimizing effort and reducing confusion.
The forum also emphasized the human dimension of the experience, noting that service quality cannot be complete without considering visitors' cultural and linguistic diversity and ensuring comfort and reassurance at every stage of the journey. Achieving this requires a harmonious integration of infrastructure, field services, and technology.
This transformation aligns with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes enhancing the pilgrim experience through a holistic development approach that goes beyond operational efficiency to deliver a fully human-centered journey.
