Makkah: The first Makkah clock, commissioned by the founding King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud in 1352 AH (1933), stands as an early testament to the Kingdom's dedication to developing the Grand Mosque.
According to Saudi Press Agency, tasked to then-Finance Minister Abdullah Al-Hamdan and overseen by Makkah Mayor Abbas Qattan, the prominent German-imported timekeeper was erected atop a government building at a height exceeding 30 meters. Designed with dual illuminated faces overlooking the Grand Mosque, Mas'a Street, and Ajyad Street, the device served as Makkah's central tool for regulating prayer times for residents and pilgrims alike.
Today, preserved segments of this historic mechanism are displayed at the Exhibition of the Two Holy Mosques Architecture, documenting the deep-rooted legacy of Saudi custodianship over Islam's holiest sites.
