Hangzhou: The UNESCO Regional Center for Quality and Excellence in Education (UNESCO RCQE) participated in the General Assembly of the World Digital Education Alliance, held during the World Digital Education Conference 2026 in Hangzhou, People's Republic of China. As a founding member of the World Digital Education Alliance, the center is committed to advancing dialogue, cooperation, and the exchange of expertise in digital education and artificial intelligence.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the World Digital Education Conference 2026, themed 'AI and Education: Transformation, Development and Governance,' focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to foster systemic transformation in education. It aimed to enhance educational quality and broaden access to digital resources. The conference took place from May 11 to 13, 2026, featuring extensive participation from governments, international organizations, educational institutions, universities, experts, and technology leaders worldwide.
During the assembly, Director General of UNESCO RCQE, Dr. Abdulrahman bin Ibrahim Al-Mudaires, underscored the significance of bolstering the Arab region's role within the World Digital Education Alliance. He pointed out the potential of Arab nations in digital education and technological advancement, emphasizing the need for international platforms that facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity building, and partnership development.
Dr. Al-Mudaires introduced a proposed regional initiative, 'The Arab Programme for Cooperation in Digital Education,' under the alliance's umbrella. The initiative seeks to enhance regional and international cooperation in digital education, develop digital content, and support digital transformation and artificial intelligence in education.
He noted that the initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4, which ensures inclusive and equitable quality education and promotes lifelong learning; SDG 8, related to decent work and economic growth; SDG 9, focused on industry, innovation, and infrastructure; and SDG 17, which emphasizes partnerships for the goals.
The conference also featured the launch of various international outputs in digital education and artificial intelligence, including initiatives, standards, and frameworks concerning AI ethics in education, smart education platforms, digital resource sharing, and bridging the global digital divide. It highlighted significant outcomes, such as enhancements to a smart education platform and the introduction of new initiatives and standards related to AI and digital education.
UNESCO RCQE's participation reaffirms its dedication to supporting international directions in education quality, digital transformation, and AI in education. It also strengthens the Arab region's contribution to global initiatives shaping the future of education, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
