Alula: AlUla Governorate has launched a collaborative initiative with renowned astrophotographers to establish itself as a premier global destination for sustainable astrotourism. This effort is part of the Royal Commission for AlUla's (RCU) ongoing commitment to promoting the region's natural and environmental assets.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the initiative is implemented under the 'AlUla Manara' umbrella, aligning with RCU's goals to protect the night sky, document its exceptional clarity and low light pollution levels, and create unique astrotourism experiences for both local and international astronomy enthusiasts. The project unites national and Arab astrophotography professionals to enhance documentation standards, facilitate the exchange of technical and scientific knowledge, and advance professional practices in the field.
The initiative emphasizes the production of scientific and documentary content that showcases AlUla's astronomical attributes. It aims to strengthen AlUla's reputation as a global dark-sky destination while fostering a local knowledge base and highlighting the importance of preserving the night sky as a natural and cultural asset.
Saudi astrophotographer Abobaker Abdullah Basudan participated in the initiative, capturing various celestial phenomena thanks to AlUla's clear skies and low light pollution. Utilizing advanced astronomical equipment, he documented scenes such as the Orion constellation and its notable nebulae, as well as meteors and faint celestial bodies. Basudan's work earned him first place in the 'Abaad' competition by the Saudi Space Agency, underscoring the burgeoning national expertise in space sciences and astrophotography.
The RCU's dedication has resulted in several sites within the governorate receiving Dark Sky designations. AlUla Manara and AlGharameel Reserve are now recognized as the first accredited Dark Sky sites in the Kingdom and the Gulf region. Additionally, Sharaan Nature and Wadi Nakhlah Nature reserves have achieved this status under international standards aimed at minimizing light pollution and safeguarding the night sky.
These accomplishments underscore AlUla's standing as a leading astrotourism destination, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030's goals to diversify income sources and elevate the Kingdom's cultural and scientific stature on the global stage.
