Riyadh:Saudi Arabia celebrated World Maritime Day with the Transport General Authority and partner entities highlighting advancements in the country's maritime sector. These advancements include fleet growth, port development, and initiatives focusing on sustainability, safety, and marine environment protection.
According to Saudi Press Agency, the number of ships registered under the Saudi flag increased from 409 in 2024 to 464 in 2026, with the fleet's gross tonnage rising by nearly 29.6%, from approximately 8.54 million tons to over 11 million tons.
As global trade flows evolve, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance supply chain resilience and sustainability by expanding its maritime connectivity network. This involves improving operational efficiency and capacity within its maritime and logistics system, as well as diversifying shipping options and routes.
In terms of maritime security and safety, Saudi Arabia continues to bolster regional and international cooperation through the Djibouti Code of Conduct and the Jeddah Amendment. The number of Saudi seafarers has increased by nearly 24%, from 2,376 in 2024 to 2,948 in 2025.
Saudi Arabia supports international maritime development by funding the IMO CARES project and launching the NextWave Seafarers project. This initiative, in partnership with the International Maritime Organization and national shipping carrier Bahri, provides practical onboard training for maritime personnel from beneficiary countries.
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is promoting women's participation in the maritime sector through training and qualification programs, with 20 female trainees attending specialized maritime courses during the first quarter of 2025.
