Riyadh: Kingdom of Bahrain Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa affirmed his country's longstanding call for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. He emphasized the necessity of resolving the Palestinian issue to ensure that all people in the region can live in security and harmony. This statement was made during his participation in the Extraordinary Arab and Islamic Summit held today in Riyadh. According to Saudi Press Agency, Shaikh Khalid called upon the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to fulfill its responsibilities by effectively responding to Bahrain's initiative, which was endorsed at the 'Bahrain Summit' held in Manama last May. This initiative aims to convene an international peace conference and support the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital. He further called for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon, the release of hostages, the opening of humanitarian corridors, and the initiation of reconstruction efforts to facilitate the return of refugees. He stressed the importance of ending the illegal Israeli occupation, preserving the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, preventing violence and settlement expansion in the West Bank, and implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on Lebanon in all its aspects. Additionally, Shaikh Khalid emphasized the need to uphold the Taif Agreement to ensure Lebanon's security, stability, and territorial integrity and to enhance the efforts of the United Nations and its agencies in the fields of peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance.
